The Yacht Club of St. Petersburg finally hosted their 2 annual fests over the last weekend from 25th to 27th January 2019. Many sailors from the J/111 and J/88 classes enjoyed very much sailing total 8 races in around 8 to 18 knots. The tough competition warranted very close racing in the whole weekend.
On Friday, a total of 4 raceswere completed and then on Saturday again in conditions which were quite breezy, although unstable weather and rain didn’t allow any contests on the day i.e. Sunday.
But after the conclusion of 8 races, only 2 points separated all the 4 boats which were competing for the Championship of J/111 Midwinter, which is a portion of J/Fest in the well-known St. Petersburg. In the last battle of Saturday which was ultimately the final battle, by means of a bullet, the Spaceman Spiff of Rob Ruhlman eked out the championship title with his crew Jim Sminchak, Doug Moose, Jeff Haase, Ryan Ruhlman, Dustin Graef, and Abigail Ruhlman.
Finishing with total 15 points (net), Spaceman flipped spots throughout the whole championship with Sittella of Ian Hill (who positioned 2nd with a total of 16 points), the Sedgwick Ward/Andrew Ward team were on Bravo (with total 16 points for 3rd spot) and Shamrock of Jeffrey Davis with total 17 points.
6 J/88s managed to escape the Polar Vortex in order to compete in another Championship of J/88 Midwinter, which is also a part of J/Fest. Wings of Mike Bruno from the Armonk of New York tallied a total of 9 points in total 8 races after only firsts and seconds were counted (after dropping a 5th in the 4th race).
The well-known competition was altogether a hit and saw some of the great performances by all of the participants.
